Random Trees in a devil strip.

It is somehow already the end of March. Which means I’m checking up on myself in things I’ve done to better my local community.

Well I like to think that the little things count. We bought some raffle tickets for the kids school, and ate our local church’s fish dinner. My Son is in the school play and we bought an advertisement in the playbill. We’ve continued to assist our older family members with things around their houses and with technology.

I think the littlest things are important to building up a local community, it doesn’t need to be grand gestures or big donations.

But what I really think is worth talking about today are Trees. When I was growing up there were beautiful trees lining the devil’s strip, this is the land between a sidewalk and the street that is technically owned by the city, it has other names in other places. Regardless, almost all of the neighborhoods with sidewalks had trees growing there and for some reason they either died, or were removed at some point.

Now we have a local non-profit that got funding to replant trees in the devil’s strip if the owners are interested. Completely free, they dig the holes and supply the trees. My yard has enough frontage for six of them and I’m very excited to finally have trees back there. Talking with the team that came to dig the holes, they have 180 trees to plant this spring and this is the third spring they are doing the planting.

I think this is a wonderful thing for building local communities. The trees will grow to shade the sidewalks and encourage more walkers and kids on bicycles. I even plan to plant several fruit trees in my front yard on my side of the sidewalk.

Let me know if you’ve done anything cool for your community this month in the comments!
