Fiscal Responsibility: Verify Your Budget Often

Back in February, I talked about Budgeting; then when I started the Financial Education Series, I also discussed the importance of a budget in “How to Build Wealth.” On the surface, it seems pretty obvious that tracking where all your money goes is the first step to spending less than you make, and then translating that into investing for your future.

Here’s the thing, though: budgets are easy to slip up on. You find a credit card charge that’s annual instead of monthly, a streaming service raises its price, or a child joins a new sport. Suddenly, you realize that your credit card isn’t paid off this paycheck, even though you’ve been really sticking to that budget you made six months prior. It’s easy to have that happen, especially when life kicks up into a busy season.

This is why I’m reminding you here to verify your budget. I’d recommend doing this quarterly if you’re still battling a mountain of debt, but semi-annually (every six months) is probably fine for people who are debt free.

I’ve noticed that while my February budget was pretty good, there are a few minor items that were missed or have been added since then. So, if you feel like your money is tighter than it used to be, it’s probably a good time to revisit that budget and find what you can cut to invest more!
