What is frugal this week? It is more like an anti-frugal week. My basement fridge, which houses our overflow meal prep and provides extra fridge storage (mainly non-alcoholic drinks), has been dying for over a month. Two appliance repair companies told me it was a coolant leak and that it would be cheaper to replace than to repair.

I checked out a few used appliance stores, but oddly enough, none of them were priced very well, or offered even 90 days of buyer protection. I generally feel that older machines work better, but my selections were very limited. Lowe’s, however, had a very well reviewed brand, Midea, on sale. With delivery and haul-away it came to $680. The most comparable used fridge that I found was $450 after delivery costs, and out of the 3 used appliance stores I checked, none would haul away the old fridge.

Oddly enough, the old fridge was only a 2019 model that my grandfather bought before he passed. A simple fridge with no ice maker or water dispenser shouldn’t fail before it is ten years old. I almost made it a full month without a surprise expense.
