I’m sure most houses keep their change somewhere. My dad used a jug similar to the picture above; I use some small bottles that I can sort into quarters, pennies, and “everything else”.

This past week, my kids got paid for their end of year report cards, and my youngest wanted to roll up all her coins that she’d been hoarding. I took this opportunity to go through the jars by our car keys as well as a bag of unsorted coins in my coin collection box.

The end result was around $125. I also found about four rolls of copper pennies (1982 and older), and a handful of wheat pennies – including a 1944 steel penny – and one silver quarter. I try not to hoard too many interesting coins, but I keep all copper pennies and silver coins.

I see two frugal paths with this $125 of change. The first is to put it toward the August grocery budget, which will free up money from our paychecks to go toward the HELOC. The second is to use it to buy some fireworks for the 4th – the fun kid friendly ones – instead of dipping into our July miscellaneous cash budget.

I haven’t decided which one to do; however, if I buy fireworks it will be today since it is the 3rd. Since I’ve committed to no longer posting on the weekends, I hope everyone has a spectacular 250th anniversary of the U.S.A!
